A policy can renew year after year while life moves on. You renovate the house. A teenager starts driving. Your business takes on work it did not do when the policy was written. The premium may be familiar even when the risk is different.
At Derek Wiley Agency, an insurance review starts with those changes. We want to understand how you use your property and what a serious loss could mean for your household or company. Then we can examine whether your coverage reflects that picture.
That is our risk advisory approach: ask the questions that matter before discussing policy options. See how an insurance review differs from a quote.
Four conversations worth having
01 · Homeowners
Could you rebuild the home you have?
The price a home could sell for is not the same question as what it would take to rebuild it. Renovations and property details belong in the review, along with how the home is actually used.
Water concerns need specifics too. A burst pipe, sewer backup, and flooding are different situations; one answer about “water damage” is not enough.
Explore homeowners coverage questions02 · Auto
Look beyond the repair bill
A serious accident can create liability far beyond the value of the car. Repairing your vehicle and paying for injuries or damage you cause are separate coverage questions.
We want to know who drives, how the vehicles are used, and whether the liability limits make sense for the household.
Understand Virginia auto liability03 · Business
Does the policy reflect today’s work?
A business description on a policy cannot tell the whole story. Adding vehicles or employees can change the review. So can using subcontractors or signing a contract with insurance requirements.
Start with what your company actually does and what has changed. That gives us something useful to compare with the policy.
See what business owners should review04 · Umbrella
How do your liability policies fit together?
As assets grow, it is worth reviewing the relationship between home, auto, and umbrella coverage. A larger limit alone does not answer whether the right people and exposures are included.
We examine the underlying policies and umbrella requirements together. Terms and exclusions still matter.

Questions shaped by claims experience
Derek Wiley’s background includes claims adjustment and senior litigation representation. That work informs the questions DWA asks before recommending coverage: what happened, who could be responsible, and what financial consequence could follow?
When WDBJ7 interviewed Derek after Southwest Virginia storms in May 2024, he discussed documenting damage, preventing further loss, and keeping expense records. Those practical details matter when a policy has to respond.

DWA’s client stories discuss issues such as rebuilding cost, vacant property, and business coverage. They show why a detail that seems minor during an application can change the insurance conversation.
Use them to recognize questions you might want to ask about your own situation. Each story has its own facts; it is not a prediction of how another claim would be handled.

Your first conversation with DWA
- Tell us what prompted the call. A renewal, home purchase, new driver, or business change is enough to start. You do not need to know the name of the coverage you might need.
- Give us a clear picture. We ask about your current situation and concerns, then determine whether DWA and the available carrier options fit your needs.
- Review the questions with a licensed team member. The insurance conversation can then focus on the gaps, limits, and policy details that deserve attention.
If you have current policy declarations and a renewal date, keep them handy. A short description of what worries you is a useful starting point even if you do not have every document yet.

Do you have an office in Roanoke?
Our main office is at 1334 Roanoke Rd in Daleville. We serve the Roanoke area, including Salem and Vinton. Meetings are by appointment.
Do I need to know which policy I need?
No. Start with your situation and concerns. A licensed team member can identify which coverage questions deserve review.
What should I have ready for the first conversation?
Your current policy declarations and renewal date are helpful if available. Tell us what changed and what you want to understand; you can begin without having every document assembled.
Can home, auto, and umbrella insurance be reviewed together?
Yes. Reviewing them together helps identify how liability limits, insured people, and policy requirements relate to one another. Recommendations depend on your situation and available options.
Can I request a review before my renewal?
Yes. Include the renewal date when you contact us so the team can discuss timing and the information needed. Allow time for a substantive review rather than waiting until the policy expires.
